Since its establishment, providing food to impoverished individuals has been a fundamental goal of Shepherd Trust. The trust prepares a nutritious mix of rice and vegetables, distributing it to those in need without discrimination based on caste, creed, color, sex, or age. Annually, over 2 lakhs (200,000) hungry individuals benefit from this initiative.
On a daily basis, food is provided to 500 people, encompassing migrant laborers, street dwellers, mentally challenged individuals, and others in need. The trust extends its food distribution to various festival occasions where access to food may be limited.
During pandemic periods, the trust has provided groceries and health & hygienic provisions to more than 50,000 individuals. Additionally, groceries worth around 60 lakhs have been supplied to government departments for distribution to deserving families during the pandemic.
Food pockets are distributed to essential workers such as police personnel, frontline health workers, sanitation staff, and casual laborers involved in pandemic missions, totaling over 2000 pockets thrice a day. Shepherd Trust also participates in Annadhana distribution during festivals, reaching around 100,000 people in Virudhunagar District and another 100,000 people in Madurai District.
The Shepherd Trust initiated free coaching classes in Computers and Tailoring around Thirumangalam Taluk, aligning with the Government's rural development schemes. A dedicated computer laboratory, equipped with 40 computers and essential software, was established, alongside 40 sewing machines for the Tailoring program. Adhering to the principle of "One trainee – one machine and one computer – one trainee," qualified trainers conduct training sessions in both Computer and Tailoring.
Responding to popular demand, ten additional Tailoring coaching centers were established on the outskirts of Madurai, proving to be an instant success with the local populace.
The Computer course has a duration of three months, with five batches per day, each lasting one and a half hours. In each session, 30 trainees receive training, totaling 150 trainees per batch. Consequently, 600 trainees are annually trained in computer skills, covering Microsoft Word, DTP, and Tally.
Tailoring coaching classes are conducted at ten locations with 20 trainees per batch, resulting in 1000 trainees per batch. Thus, a total of 4000 individuals benefit from the Tailoring program annually.
Shepherd Trust places a strong emphasis on uplifting the economically and socially underprivileged, particularly focusing on improving education standards in numerous villages. To achieve this goal, the Trust initiates a program of freely supplying notebooks to Panchayat Union Elementary and Middle schools in the Kalligudi, Thirumangalam, and Chellampatti Union of Madurai District.
In this initiative, the Trust ensures the provision of notebooks covering the students' academic needs for an entire year. The precise requirements for each student per standard are carefully assessed in consultation with the headmasters/headmistresses. The notebooks are meticulously packed in carry bags and personally delivered to each student to prevent any slips along the way. The quality of the notebooks, the effectiveness of distribution, and the timely delivery to students have received commendation from schools, the local population, and state education department officials.
Approximately 40,000 Elementary and Middle School students from 400 schools have benefited from this initiative, with the distribution of 200,000 notebooks provided free of cost to meet the needs of deserving students.
